As a general book on the topics mentioned in the title (parallel and distributed software applications) the way things are put together here seems a bit random. If taking an IT course where those topic are covered in just the same way, the book is surely useful - and the metaphors for explaining the different elements of parallelism help to memorize some abstract concepts.
